Udyam Registration for Small Businesses: What It Is and How to Register for Free

Udyam Registration: Free MSME Guide – Money & Compliance

If you run a small business in India, you have probably heard someone say “get your MSME registration done”. That registration is called Udyam. It is free, done online, takes about 15 minutes, and gives your business an official identity that can help with loans, government schemes and getting paid on time.

This guide explains what Udyam is, whether you should register, and exactly how to do it without paying an agent.

What is Udyam registration?

Udyam registration is the Government of India’s official registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). When you register, you get a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate. It replaced the older “Udyog Aadhaar” in 2020.

Registration is done on the official portal: udyamregistration.gov.in. It is completely free.

Is my business micro, small or medium?

Your category depends on your investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and your annual turnover. From 1 April 2025, the limits are:

  • Micro: investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore
  • Small: investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore
  • Medium: investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore

Almost every neighbourhood shop, home business, workshop and small service provider falls in the micro category.

Who can register?

  • Manufacturers, such as food makers, tailoring units, workshops and small factories
  • Service providers, such as repair shops, salons, tutors, agencies and consultants
  • Retail and wholesale traders can also register. Note that for traders, the main benefit is access to priority-sector bank lending, and not every MSME scheme applies to them.

Proprietors, partnerships, LLPs and companies can all register.

What you need before you start

  • Aadhaar number of the owner (proprietor), managing partner or director, with the mobile number linked to it for the OTP
  • PAN of the business or proprietor
  • GSTIN, if your business is required to have GST registration
  • Business name and address
  • Bank account number and IFSC
  • Main business activity and the number of employees
  • Rough investment and turnover figures

You usually do not need to upload any documents. Most details are self-declared or fetched automatically from PAN and GST records.

Step-by-step: how to register

  1. Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and click the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered as MSME.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number and name exactly as on Aadhaar, and verify with the OTP sent to your mobile.
  3. Choose your type of organisation (for example, proprietorship) and enter your PAN. The portal checks it automatically.
  4. Fill in your business details: name, address, date of starting, bank details and the number of employees.
  5. Select your main activity (manufacturing, services or trading) and choose the matching NIC code that describes what you do.
  6. Enter investment and turnover details. For businesses with PAN and GST, these are picked up from tax records.
  7. Submit with a final OTP. Your Udyam Registration Number is generated, and the certificate can be downloaded from the portal.

Real benefits for a small business

  • Easier bank loans: MSME loans count as priority-sector lending, and banks often have special MSME loan products and collateral-free schemes.
  • Government schemes and subsidies: many central and state schemes require Udyam registration to apply.
  • Protection against delayed payments: micro and small enterprises have legal protection when buyers delay payments, and can file complaints through the government’s MSME Samadhaan portal.
  • Government tenders: registered micro and small enterprises get certain benefits in government purchases.
  • Credibility: a Udyam number shows customers and suppliers that you are a registered, serious business.

What Udyam registration is not

It is not a GST registration, not a trade licence and not a shop and establishment registration. You may still need those depending on your business and state. Udyam is an additional identity that unlocks MSME benefits.

Watch out for fake websites

Many websites with names that look official charge ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 for “Udyam registration”. The real process is free on udyamregistration.gov.in. Always check the web address ends in .gov.in before you enter your Aadhaar or pay anything.

Frequently asked questions

No. It is a one-time registration. Your classification can be updated automatically based on your tax data.

Can I register without GST?

Yes, if your business is not required to register under GST. You will still need a PAN.

I have no PAN or GST. Is there any option?

For very small, informal micro businesses, the government runs the Udyam Assist Platform, where registration is done with the help of designated agencies such as banks and other approved bodies. Ask your bank branch about it.
