12 Low-Cost Ways to Get More Customers to Your Local Shop

12 Low-Cost Ways to Get More Customers – Small Business Guides

Big brands spend lakhs on advertising. A local shop does not need to. Most of the customers you want live or work within a few kilometres, and the best ways to reach them cost very little: a bit of time, a few hundred rupees, and some consistency.

Here are twelve ideas that work for kirana stores, boutiques, bakeries, salons, repair shops and almost any local business. You do not need to do all of them. Pick three and start this week.

Get found

1. Get on Google Maps properly

When people search “near me”, Google Maps decides who they see. A complete, verified Google Business Profile with real photos and reviews is the single most valuable free thing a local shop can do. Our step-by-step Google Maps guide walks you through it.

2. Make your signboard work harder

Your signboard is advertising you have already paid for. Is it clean, lit at night and readable from across the road? Does it say what you sell, not just your name? “Sharma Store” says little; “Sharma Store – Groceries, Dairy & Home Delivery” brings people in.

3. Put a QR code at the counter

Print one QR code that opens your WhatsApp chat and another for your Google review link. Customers already in your shop are your easiest followers and reviewers.

Bring people back

4. Start a simple customer list

Ask regular customers if they would like updates on WhatsApp, and save their numbers with a label. A list of 200 local customers who know you is worth more than 5,000 random followers.

5. Use WhatsApp status every day

Fresh stock, today’s special, a festival offer. Status is free, and many customers check it daily. Our WhatsApp Business guide covers how to set it up for orders.

6. A simple loyalty card

A printed card with ten boxes: “Buy 9, get the 10th free” or “₹100 off after 10 visits”. It costs a few rupees to print and gives people a reason to choose you over the shop next door.

7. Remember people

Greeting regular customers by name, remembering their usual order, or setting aside an item you know they like costs nothing and builds loyalty that discounts cannot buy.

Reach new people nearby

8. Partner with neighbouring businesses

A bakery and a flower shop, a boutique and a tailor, a gym and a juice shop. Recommend each other, display each other’s cards, or run a joint offer. Their customers are your future customers.

9. Get into local WhatsApp groups the right way

Many housing societies and colonies have resident groups. Do not spam them. Instead, ask the admin if you can share a one-time introduction or a festival offer for residents, or offer a small discount for society members.

10. Show up at local events

A small stall at a society function, school fair or festival mela introduces you to hundreds of local families in a single day, often for a small fee.

Make it easy to buy

11. Offer local home delivery

Even delivery within 2 to 3 km, a few hours a day, can open you up to busy families and elderly customers. Set a minimum order value so it stays worthwhile.

12. Accept every common payment method

UPI, cards and cash. Losing a sale because “only cash” or “only UPI” is the most expensive mistake a shop can make. And keep your prices visible, in the shop and online.

How to start this week

  1. Day 1: check your Google Maps listing and fix or create it.
  2. Day 2: print a QR code for WhatsApp and reviews and place it at the counter.
  3. Day 3: ask five loyal customers for a Google review.
  4. Day 4: talk to one neighbouring shop about a partnership.
  5. Every day after: one WhatsApp status update.

None of these ideas is magic on its own. Together, done consistently for a few months, they make your shop the one people in your area think of first.
