Think about the last time you needed a medical store, a tailor or a mobile repair shop in an unfamiliar area. You probably opened Google Maps and typed “near me”. Your customers do exactly the same thing. If your shop is not on Google Maps, those customers walk into the shop that is.
The good news: getting your shop on Google Maps is free, and you can do most of it from your phone in under an hour. This guide walks you through it step by step, in plain language.
What is a Google Business Profile?
A Google Business Profile (earlier called “Google My Business”) is your shop’s free listing on Google Search and Google Maps. When someone searches for your shop name, or for something like “sweet shop near me”, your profile can show your:
- Shop name, location pin and directions
- Phone number, with a one-tap call button
- Opening hours
- Photos of your shop and products
- Customer reviews and star rating
- Website or WhatsApp link
For many small businesses, this one listing brings more walk-in customers than any paid advertising.
Before you start: keep these ready
- A Google account (your Gmail works). Use one you will keep long-term, ideally one for the business.
- Your exact shop name, as written on your signboard
- Your full address with a landmark and PIN code
- A working phone number that customers can call
- Your opening hours, including your weekly holiday
- 5 to 10 clear photos: the shop front with the signboard, the inside, and your best products
Step 1: Check if your shop is already listed
Open Google Maps and search for your shop name and area. Sometimes a customer or Google itself has already created a listing. If you find it, open it and tap “Own this business?” or “Claim this business”, then follow the steps. If nothing shows up, create a new profile in the next step. Do not create a duplicate if a listing already exists, as duplicates can get suspended.
Step 2: Create your profile
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
- Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard. Do not stuff extra keywords like “Best Cheap Mobile Shop Pune”. Google can suspend profiles for this.
- Choose your business category. Pick the most specific one, such as “Sweet shop” rather than just “Store”. You can add more categories later.
- Say yes to adding a location customers can visit, and enter your address. Place the pin exactly on your shop door on the map.
- If you also deliver or provide services at customers’ homes, add your service areas.
- Add your phone number and your website. If you do not have a website yet, you can skip it for now.
Step 3: Verify your business
Google needs proof that your business is real and that you are the owner. You cannot always choose the method; Google decides based on your business and its history. The common methods are:
- Video verification: now the most common method for new profiles. You record one continuous short video showing your signboard and the street around it, the inside of your shop with products or equipment, and something only the owner has, like opening the shutter or the cash counter, or showing business documents.
- Phone or SMS: Google sends a code to the business number.
- Email: a code is sent to your email.
- Instant verification: occasionally offered when Google already has enough information about your business.
Postcard verification by post, which many older guides mention, has been discontinued.
Tips for passing video verification the first time
- Record during daytime so the signboard is clearly readable.
- Start outside, showing the street or nearby landmark, then walk into the shop without cutting the video.
- Make sure the name on the signboard matches the name on your profile.
- Show stock, equipment or tools that prove the business is running.
- Keep it steady and short; one or two minutes is enough.
Review can take a few business days. Do not keep editing your name or address while verification is pending, because that can restart the process.
Step 4: Complete every part of your profile
A half-filled profile ranks lower than a complete one. Once verified, fill in:
- Description: two or three honest lines about what you sell and what makes you different. For example: “Family-run sweet shop since 1998, known for fresh kaju katli and festival gift boxes. Home delivery within 3 km.”
- Hours: including special hours for festivals and holidays.
- Photos: add new photos every few weeks. Shop front, interior, products, and you or your staff. Real photos build trust.
- Products or services: add your popular items with prices if you can.
- Attributes: things like “accepts UPI”, “wheelchair accessible” or “home delivery”.
Step 5: Get reviews, the right way
Reviews are one of the biggest reasons a shop appears above others on Google Maps. Ask happy customers for a review. Your profile has a “Ask for reviews” or share option that gives you a direct review link. Put that link on your WhatsApp status, on your bills, or print it as a QR code at your counter.
Two important rules:
- Never buy fake reviews or offer discounts in exchange for 5-star ratings. Google removes them and can suspend your profile.
- Reply to every review, good or bad. A calm, polite reply to a complaint often impresses new customers more than ten 5-star reviews.
Step 6: Keep it alive
Google favours active profiles. Once a week or so, spend five minutes on it:
- Post an update: a new arrival, a festival offer, or new timings.
- Answer customer questions in the Q&A section.
- Update hours before Diwali, Eid, Christmas or any holiday.
- Check your insights to see how many people called you or asked for directions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a personal Gmail that you might lose access to later
- Adding keywords or city names to the business name
- Placing the map pin at your home instead of the shop
- Different phone numbers or addresses on your signboard, visiting card and profile
- Creating a second listing because the first one had a problem
- Forgetting to update hours when you are closed
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile really free?
Yes. Creating and managing the profile costs nothing. Be careful of callers who say they are “from Google” and ask for money to list or verify your shop.
Can I list my business if I work from home?
Yes. If customers do not visit your home, choose the option to hide your address and list only your service areas instead.
How long until my shop shows up on Maps?
Usually a few days after verification is approved. Showing up near the top of results takes longer and depends on your reviews, how complete your profile is, and how close the customer is.
The next step
A Google Business Profile gets customers to find you. A simple website gives them a place to see your full range of products, prices and offers, and to contact you on WhatsApp in one tap, and you can link it straight from your profile. If you would like one built for your shop without the technical work, NearBuyStore does exactly that for small businesses across India.
Start with Step 1 today. Ten minutes on Google Maps now can bring customers to your door for years.
